Following the government’s recently announced vision for improving Social Care, a new Commission on Adult Social Care Reform has been established. Headed by Louise Casey. This body will explore long-term solutions to the challenges facing the sector.
The commission is tasked with addressing critical issues in Adult Social Care, including sustainable funding, workforce support, and service quality. While the commission’s final report isn’t due until 2028, the government has emphasised the urgency of reform, with plans to make recommendations for immediate action along the way.
This move has been welcomed by many in the care sector, including The King’s Fund, which highlights the importance of addressing long-standing challenges in workforce retention, funding gaps, and system-wide inequalities.
What This Means for Care Providers Now
While the commission works on long-term reform, care providers need to focus on being ready for the here and now, particularly with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) ramping up inspections in 2025.
Key priorities for care providers include:
Inspection Readiness
The CQC’s increased focus on the Single Assessment Framework and Quality Statements means inspections will be more frequent. Providers must ensure their teams are confident, well-trained, and able to demonstrate how their work meets compliance standards.
Leadership Development
With the government’s emphasis on stronger leadership, it’s vital for providers to invest in leadership training to support staff, maintain high standards, and drive continuous improvement.
Workforce Support
The commission’s work underlines the importance of retaining skilled staff. Empowering teams with the tools and confidence they need will not only improve morale but also enhance service delivery.
Stay Proactive Amid Uncertainty
The commission’s findings could lead to significant changes, but care providers can’t afford to wait for reform. With increased inspections and growing expectations from regulators, providers need to act now to strengthen their leadership, compliance, and workforce development practices.
